Installing the Left 4 Dead series from Disc

What is the process of installing my retail copy of Left 4 Dead or Left 4 Dead 2 on my PC?

Answer

Mac Users:

If you are using a Mac, you will not be able to install from the disc. Please double-click on the game in your Library list to begin downloading and installing the software.

First, make sure Steam is installed. Click here to: download and install the latest version of Steam.
Once Steam has been installed, please continue by following these directions:

• Login to the account you wish to use to access your games.
  Note: You may only register your CD Key to one account.
• Put the disk in your DVD drive.
  • If the installer does not automatically start, right-click on the drive and go to Explore.
  • Double-click the Setup.exe.
• Select your Setup Language.  The following screenshots will be from the English language installation.
• You will be presented with the following menu:
  Select Install.
  Note:If you have previously registered your copy of Left 4 Dead to your computer, you will use the option Reinstall.
  
• You will be presented with the following dialog box:
  Locate the CD Key that came with your purchase and enter it here.
  Note: Valve CD Keys do not include the number 1, number 0, or the letter O. If you see what looks like a one, use the letter i. If you see what appears to be a zero or the letter O, use the letter Q.
  
• Click Next >
• You will see the following dialog box:
  Wait...
  
• You will then see the following dialog box:
  If desired, you may Print Receipt then click Next >.
  
• You will be presented with the following dialog box:
  
  
  
  Select Next >.
   
• You will be presented with the following dialog box:
  Select any options you wish and click Next >.
  
• You will be presented with the following dialog box:
  Wait...
  
• You will be presented with the following dialog box:
  Wait... Note: "Installing from disk..."
  
• You will be presented with the following dialog box:
  Click Finish.
  
• Your games will download an update as part of the authentication process. When Left 4 Dead reads Ready to play the game is ready to play.
